About

What is the Game of Estimation?

Estimation is a card game usually played by four players using a standard 52-card deck. The core concept is bidding (estimating how many tricks each player can win during a round) and then trying to win exactly that number.

Objective of the Game

Each player estimates the number of tricks (rounds) they can win based on the hand they’re dealt, and then tries to win exactly that number. If the player succeeds, they earn points. If they overbid or underbid, they lose points.

Benefits & Importance of the Game

  • Enhances Strategic Thinking
  • Improves Memory & Focus
  • Teaches Risk Management
  • Strengthens Planning & Anticipation Skills
  • Develops Communication & Psychological Insight

Types of Rounds in the Game

In each round, one of the players (in rotation) chooses the type of contract to play:

  • No Trumps: No suit is stronger (no trump suit).
  • Trumps: One suit is designated as the trump (stronger than others).
  • Suit Trumps: A specific suit (e.g., Hearts or Spades) is chosen as the trump.

Scoring System

If your prediction is accurate, you earn points (depending on round type). If you miss your bid, you lose points – especially in Misère rounds (where the aim is to win no tricks at all).

02

Social Tradition

Many groups play it weekly in regular sessions, making it a social ritual among friends and relatives.

03

Not Based on Luck

Like the difference between chess and backgammon, Estimation involves more thinking and skill than games like Baloot or Tarneeb.
